Weld aluminum as easily as steel with the new Elektron MIG/MAG welding machine

The MultiMig 511 and MultiMig 522 MIG/MAG welders can weld and braze aluminum alloys, galvanized sheet metal, stainless steel and high strength steel. They are programmed with synergic welding preset curves so technicians can start welding immediately without lengthy setup or training. Several programmable options are also available to customize the operation of the welding machine according to the specific needs of the customer and the working conditions. These welders have the high duty cycle and power required for most bodyshop applications, use wire up to 1.2mm in diameter, and a push-pull torch type that is critical for smooth aluminum wire feeding.
“North American technicians often don’t have much aluminum repair experience, which can make them uncomfortable with the correct welding method,” says Mickey Schwartz, director of global emergency product management at Vehicle Service Group (VSG), Elektron’s parent company. Aluminum repair requires training and the right equipment. I have heard from many technicians that our Elektron MIG/MAG welder can turn a beginner or even an average welder into an excellent aluminum welder. do it right.”
Both MultiMig 511 and MultiMig 522 can be fitted with Elektron’s unique push-pull torch. Because aluminum wire is very soft, a welder using a “push” wire feeder to feed the wire from the feed roller to the welding torch may encounter tangled wire, resulting in downtime as the technician stops welding to cut the tangled pipe. Spool guns use a “pull” system where a small spool of wire is placed on the torch itself, but they can be very bulky and difficult to use. In this type of system, control of the speed and power of the welder can also be lost, resulting in wire breaks. As such, the Aluminum Association’s sheet metal recovery practice for aluminum recommends using a “push-pull” torch to maintain a constant and even tension on the wire to minimize breakage or tangles.
Compact and lightweight, Elektron push-pull welding torches are equipped with touch controls for real-time control of the wire feed speed and welder output current during welding, which is especially useful for controlling heat and power when welding large diameter wire.
Any welding machine can also be used with standard MIG welding torches. Taking it one step further, the MultiMig 522 can be equipped with two separate torches at the same time, each with its own coil and wire for even greater versatility. Switching between the two flashlights is done with a simple flick of a switch. The MultiMig 522 also adds a Dual Pulse feature that delivers hot and cold pulses for better vertical and overhead welds and reduced welding drooling.
MultiMig 511 and 522 use the synergic pulse technology required for aluminum welding in most OEMs. Therefore, they reduce burn-through on very thin aluminum plates, but provide full penetration on thicker aluminum plates.
Both welders are more environmentally friendly and save money with built-in Power Factor Correction (PFC) technology to reduce energy waste. Both come with built-in trolleys, including storage for gas cylinders for welding. Full technical specifications for both products are available at Chiefautomotive.com.
MultiMig 511 and MultiMig 522 are part of Elektron’s new range of collision repair equipment specifically designed for the repair of aluminum automotive components. The range also includes the M22 AL and M25 AL aluminum stud welding machines and the MultiTool aluminum dent repair station.
